Your floors and Water...

Yes, over exposure to water will damage your flooring. It doesn't matter if it is carpet, solid hardwood, engineered or laminate, water in bulk will cause cupping, cracking and bowing. This is exactly why you use a moisture barrier prior to installation. This barrier stops any moisture from coming up through the subfloor in form of evaporation, and passing into your actual flooring. This is why a concrete slab must be sealed prior to installation. However, sometimes the moisture barrier helps in destroying your floor in certain situations. For example, a leaky ice maker behind a refrigerator can leak slowly for many days unnoticed. And, because of the fact that the moisture barrier is laid beneath the solid wood floor, or laminate what have you, the water will spread unnabated across a substantial portion of your floor.
